Wild Rose 2 Project

Location:  The proposed project is located 30 km south of Medicine Hat. The Project Study Area is centered on the intersection of the Eagle Butte Road and Township Road 100.

Total Planned Installed Capacity:  162 MW

Project Area: The Project area contains approximately 20,000 acres of privately owned land. The Project includes 30 local landowners.

Project Footprint: The actual land area occupied by the Project facilities including turbine sites, new access roads, transformer station site and the collector lines will be approximately 50 to 100 acres.

Turbine Specs:  The Project is currently planned with 108 Acciona 1.5 MW turbines.  The turbine height from base to hub will be approximately 80 metres and each blade will be approximately 40 metres in length. The height from ground to maximum blade height will be 120 metres.

Project Area Layout Map: The Project layout is available for download here. This map includes location of turbines, access roads and collector system.  The substation location is currently planned for section SW-12-10-04-W4M.  The turbine layout has been extensively studied and takes into account noise concerns, wildlife impact, oil & gas structure locations, available access, and natural terrain restrictions.

Planned Commercial In-Service Date: 2012.

Project Update: Environmental and wildlife surveys were completed in 2009. A draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) has been prepared and, once approved, will be available on this website for viewing soon. On February 16, 2010, Cypress County approved the rezoning of the project area as a wind energy facility district.

Consultation Events: An open house event was held in the afternoon of February 2, 2010 for the general public.  A Cypress County public hearing was held for the project on February 16, 2010. No new public consultation events are planned for the coming months, however, consultation always remains ongoing and any feedback or comments should be directed to the Project Developer listed below.

AUC Application: A Power Plant application with the Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC) is being prepared and will be submitted in early 2010. Please see the AUC application and consultation brochure for more information on the AUC process, or visit the AUC website at: http://www.auc.ab.ca/involving-albertans/Pages/default.aspx.

Benefits of the Project to the Community
When construction begins, local and regional benefits will include land royalties for landowners, hundreds of construction jobs and local economic impacts due to the need for construction materials, resources and labour.  During operation, municipal taxes and landowner royalties will be paid for decades and permanent jobs for operations and maintenance will also be created.
